Also worth visiting is Sammy Marks’ Museum, a handsome Victorian mansion built in 1884 for the mining magnate Sammy Marks. You can picnic in the tea garden and imagine playing croquet and eating sandwiches whilst lying back and enjoying a cloudless blue sky. If you can try to take a trip out to Fort Klapperkop Military Museum, it is one of the most well preserved forts in South Africa. The Museum tells the tale of the country’s military history from 1852 up until the Anglo-Boer War. It also has superb views at the top over the city and the local region. Before setting off to do your sight-seeing you might need a strong coffee, visit News Café which is a popular chain café and serves breakfast and burgers. Free wi-fi and relaxed feel make this a hub for local students.
